Shashtikashali Pinda Swedam / Njavara Kizhi

Shashtikashali, a medicinal rice harvested in 60 days, is used in Shashtikashali Pinda Swedam (also known as Njavara Kizhi in Kerala), a therapeutic fomentation technique. The procedure involves boluses filled with Njavara rice, cooked in a decoction of Sida cordifolia and milk. Due to its cooling and nourishing properties, it is primarily used to address Vata imbalances and moderate Pitta vitiation. This therapy can be applied either as a full-body treatment or locally.

Purvakarma (Pre-Procedural Routine):Initially, a bolus of Shastika Shali is prepared. The patient should be seated with legs extended over a droni, and talam applied with appropriate oil. Following this, an Abhyanga massage is performed using the prescribed oil.

Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure): Warm potalis are gently applied in a synchronized manner over the patient’s body. This is followed by a gentle massage using the other hand. The process continues until the desired signs of fomentation are achieved or until the bolus contents are exhausted.

Paschat Karma (Post-Procedural Measures): Once the procedure concludes, the remaining medicine on the body is scraped off using coconut leaves or a similar tool, and the body is wiped dry with tissue paper or soft towels. Subsequently, medicated oil is applied, talam is removed, and Rasnadi Churna is applied to the head.

The procedure enhances body flexibility, alleviates joint stiffness, cleanses the microchannels, and improves circulation. It also promotes a healthy complexion, supports metabolic function, and nourishes the body. The heat applied stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, inducing vasodilation and improving overall circulation.
